This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the intricate workings of hybrid vehicle drivetrain systems. It delves into their fundamental principles, diverse architectures, and advanced diagnostic techniques. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of how internal combustion engines (ICEs) and electric motors synergize within various hybrid configurations, including series, parallel, and series-parallel (power-split) systems. In a series hybrid system, the internal combustion engine (ICE) does not directly power the wheels. Instead, it acts as a generator, producing electricity to power an electric motor that drives the vehicle, or to recharge the battery. This configuration allows the ICE to operate at its most efficient speed, but power is converted twice (mechanical to electrical, then electrical to mechanical), leading to some energy losses.

Regenerative braking is a crucial feature in hybrid vehicles. When the driver applies the brakes or lifts off the accelerator, the electric motor acts as a generator, converting the vehicle's kinetic energy into electricity. This electricity is then stored in the high-voltage battery pack, rather than being wasted as heat through traditional friction braking. This process significantly improves fuel efficiency, especially in stop-and-go urban driving.
